Choose Your Devices for Home

Every option below is compatible with this solution and comes from different brands and models. Choose one IP-PBX platform; the parts that must match its brand update automatically.

A home needs room-to-room intercom, a gate and guard-post line and calls that keep working through power cuts. A small PBX on a UPS covers all of it without a monthly bill.

This is the wireless solution: an IP-PBX with Wi-Fi handsets on access points. Staff stay reachable while moving around. It contains no desk phones and no analog equipment.

Typical size: 6–12 extensions with 1–2 outside lines.

IP-PBX Step 2 Choose first

Choose ONE IP-PBX platform whose extension and concurrent-call limits cover your busiest hour. The phone options follow its brand.

How many: 1 PBX; extensions ≥ users + 25% spare

Buying Guide: IP Solution · Wireless Phones

What to check at each step. Tap a step to open it; products are chosen above in “Choose Your Devices”.

Step 1: Extensions, lines & call needs

Planning step

Buying guide

Count users, departments, outside lines and peak calls.

Details

  • Check before buying: Users per department, outside lines and busiest-hour calls
  • Common mistake: Sizing by headcount only

How to choose

  • List every desk, department and shared phone (the gate first) that needs an extension
  • Count outside lines from your busiest hour, not total staff
  • Note features you need: call transfer, ring groups, IVR menu, voicemail, recording
  • Add 20–30% spare extensions for growth
  • Mark which staff move around and the areas they must be reachable in

Rule of thumb

A useful rule for a home: outside lines ≈ 1 for every 4–6 staff, then add spare extensions for growth.

Step 2: IP-PBX platform

IP-PBX

Buying guide

Confirm it supports DECT, Wi-Fi phones and the mobile app.

Details

  • Check before buying: Support for DECT bases, SIP handsets and softphone licenses
  • Common mistake: A PBX without mobile app or DECT support

How to choose

  • Check the PBX supports your DECT system or Wi-Fi handsets
  • Softphone / mobile app licenses are often per user
  • Concurrent calls still decide how many people can talk at once
  • Remote app users need secure access (VPN or SBC)

Rule of thumb

Confirm DECT and mobile app support on the PBX before choosing handsets.

Key specifications to compare

  • Extensions
  • concurrent calls
  • DECT / app support

Right product when

The PBX supports the handsets and apps you plan to use.

Step 3: Wireless handset type

Wireless Phones

Buying guide

DECT for reliable voice, Wi-Fi phones or apps for flexibility.

Details

  • Check before buying: Battery life, roaming and durability for each user group
  • Common mistake: Using Wi-Fi phones on a congested office Wi-Fi

How to choose

  • DECT handsets use their own radio band, so voice stays clear and batteries last longer
  • Wi-Fi phones need a voice-ready Wi-Fi network with roaming
  • Softphone apps turn staff mobiles into extensions
  • Choose rugged handsets for warehouses, factories and hospitals

Rule of thumb

For a home, use DECT handsets for staff on the move and apps for occasional remote users.

Key specifications to compare

  • DECT / Wi-Fi / app
  • battery (h)
  • roaming
  • rugged rating

Right product when

Handset type, battery and durability suit each user group.

Step 4: Coverage: DECT bases & access points

Base Stations & APs

Buying guide

Survey coverage and plan bases for seamless roaming.

Details

  • Check before buying: Coverage in every area, calls per base and roaming support
  • Common mistake: Too few base stations for the floor area

How to choose

  • Walk-test signal in every room, stairwell and outdoor area
  • Each DECT base handles a limited number of simultaneous calls
  • Multi-cell DECT or Wi-Fi roaming hands calls over between bases
  • Power bases and access points from the PoE switch

Rule of thumb

Survey the site and add bases until every area has signal and enough calls per base.

Key specifications to compare

  • Range
  • calls per base
  • roaming / multi-cell
  • PoE

Right product when

Every area has coverage with seamless handover between bases.

Step 5: SIP trunk & outside lines

Gateways & Trunks

Buying guide

Confirm the provider, channels and a backup route.

Details

  • Check before buying: SIP provider, channel count, codecs and failover lines
  • Common mistake: Assuming any SIP trunk works with any PBX

How to choose

  • Check the SIP provider is tested with your PBX model and supports G.711 / G.729
  • Channels = simultaneous outside calls at the busiest hour
  • Keep a PSTN or GSM gateway line as backup when the internet fails
  • Use a static IP or a provider that supports registration behind NAT

Rule of thumb

Keep at least one PSTN or GSM line through a gateway so calls still work when the internet is down.

Key specifications to compare

  • SIP provider
  • channels
  • G.711 / G.729
  • FXO / GSM backup

Right product when

Provider is verified with the PBX and a backup route exists.

Step 6: Network, voice VLAN & PoE

PoE Switches

Buying guide

Give voice its own VLAN, QoS and enough PoE.

Details

  • Check before buying: Switch ports, voice VLAN / QoS support and PoE watt budget
  • Common mistake: Voice on an overloaded office LAN

How to choose

  • Put phones on a voice VLAN with QoS so calls stay clear when the LAN is busy
  • Most IP phones draw 3–7 W (802.3af); sum all phones and base stations
  • Choose a switch whose PoE budget exceeds the total with headroom
  • Keep every Cat6 run within 100 m

Worked illustration

Illustration: 24 phones × 5 W = 120 W, so choose a 24-port PoE switch with more than 120 W budget.

Key specifications to compare

  • PoE ports
  • PoE budget (W)
  • voice VLAN
  • QoS

Right product when

Total PoE budget and ports cover every phone with headroom, with voice on its own VLAN.

Step 7: UPS & power backup

UPS & Power

Buying guide

Keep the PBX, switch and gateway running in a power cut.

Details

  • Check before buying: Load of PBX, PoE switch and gateway, and the runtime you need
  • Common mistake: No backup power on the phone system

How to choose

  • Add the watts of the PBX, PoE switch, gateway and router
  • Choose UPS runtime at the real load, not the maximum rating
  • Keep emergency and reception lines on backup power
  • Test and replace batteries on schedule

Rule of thumb

Put the PBX, PoE switch and gateway on a UPS so reception can still take calls during load-shedding.

Key specifications to compare

  • VA / watts
  • runtime
  • outlets

Right product when

Runtime covers the PBX, switch and gateway for your typical outage.

Step 8: Installation & maintenance

Services

Buying guide

Plan programming, testing and a support plan.

Details

  • Check before buying: Site survey, extension plan, programming and service plan
  • Common mistake: No numbering plan or documentation

How to choose

  • Start with a site survey and an extension numbering plan
  • Program IVR, ring groups, trunks and permissions before go-live
  • Test every extension, outside line and transfer
  • Hand over a numbering list and admin passwords, and agree a support plan

Rule of thumb

Handover should include the extension list, IVR flow and a test of every outside line.

Key specifications to compare

  • Survey
  • programming
  • testing
  • SLA

Right product when

Scope covers survey, programming, testing and a clear support SLA.

Step 9: Warranty & support

Planning step

Buying guide

Verify warranty, support and spare handsets.

Details

  • Check before buying: Warranty period, support channel and spares
  • Common mistake: Unclear replacement terms

How to choose

  • Compare warranty length for the PBX and phones
  • Confirm local support hours and remote programming help
  • Keep one or two spare handsets for quick swaps
  • Buy from an authorised source

Rule of thumb

Ask for warranty length, support hours and spare availability in writing.
