CCTV Night Vision: IR, Full-Colour and Smart Hybrid Light Explained

Black-and-white IR, full-colour cameras with warm light, or smart hybrid models that switch between them: here is how each works after dark and where to use it.

Most incidents happen at night, so night performance is one of the most important things to check when choosing a camera. Today there are three main approaches.

1. Infrared (IR) night vision

IR cameras use invisible infrared LEDs to light the scene. The image turns black and white, but it stays sharp and the light does not disturb anyone. IR range is usually listed as 20m, 30m or more.

Good for: bedrooms, corridors, places where visible light would annoy people.
Limits: no colour, so clothing and vehicle colours are lost.

2. Full-colour cameras

Full-colour models (sold under names like ColorVu or Full-Color) use a sensitive sensor and a large aperture, often with a soft white light. They show colour even at night.

Good for: gates, car parks, shop fronts and outdoor areas where colour helps identification.
Limits: the white light is visible and can attract insects. It may disturb neighbours if aimed badly.

3. Smart hybrid / dual light

Hybrid cameras stay in IR mode by default. When they detect a person or vehicle, they switch on the white light and record in colour. This combines quiet monitoring with colour evidence when it matters, and the sudden light can also deter intruders.

Check the real sceneStreet lights, signboards and reflective walls change night results a lot. If possible, test one camera at the actual spot before buying ten.

Common night-time problems and fixes

White fog on the image: IR reflecting off a nearby wall, eave or dirty dome cover. Move the camera or clean the cover.
Spider webs triggering alerts: IR attracts insects. Clean regularly, or use a colour or hybrid model.
Faces too bright: the subject is too close to strong IR. Enable smart IR or angle the camera.

Which should you choose?

Use IR indoors, full-colour at well-defined outdoor points like gates, and smart hybrid where you want both quiet monitoring and colour evidence. Many good systems use all three.
