Fiber Optic Basics: Single-Mode vs Multimode, SC vs LC

Fiber carries data much further than copper and is immune to lightning and electrical noise. Here is what single-mode, multimode, OS2, OM3, SC and LC actually mean.

When a network has to cross a large factory, connect two buildings or run between floors, fiber optic cable is usually the right answer. The terms can be confusing, so here is a plain-language guide.

Why use fiber?

Distance: from hundreds of metres to many kilometres, compared with 100 m for copper.
No electrical interference: fiber carries light, not electricity, so it is not affected by motors, power cables or lightning surges between buildings.
High bandwidth: plenty of capacity for future upgrades.

Single-mode vs multimode

Today single-mode is often chosen even for shorter runs, because modules have become affordable and it leaves room for growth.

Match everythingCable, patch cords and SFP modules must all be the same type. A single-mode module will not work properly on multimode fiber.

Connector types

LC: small, latching connector. Common on switches and SFP modules.
SC: larger, square push-pull connector. Common on patch panels and older equipment.

Hybrid patch cords such as LC to SC connect different equipment.

Indoor vs armoured cable

For outdoor or underground routes, use armoured loose-tube fiber. It resists rodents, moisture and crushing. Indoor runs can use lighter tight-buffer cable.

Installation and testing

Fiber is terminated by fusion splicing pigtails and tested with a light source, power meter or OTDR. A visual fault locator (red laser) quickly finds breaks and tight bends. Keep connectors clean and always fit dust caps; a dirty connector is the most common cause of fiber problems.
