Fingerprint, Face or Card? Choosing the Right Access Control Method
Each access control method has strengths and weak points. Compare fingerprint, face recognition, RFID cards and PIN for speed, hygiene, cost and security.
Access control decides who can open which door, and when. Most systems also record attendance. The first decision is how people will identify themselves.
RFID card or tag
- Pros: fast, cheap, works with gloves, easy to issue to visitors.
- Cons: cards can be lent, lost or copied (especially older 125 kHz cards).
- Best for: visitor access, car parks, hotels, general doors.
Fingerprint
- Pros: cannot be lent like a card, affordable, widely used for attendance.
- Cons: slower with dirty, wet or worn fingers (common in factories and construction). Requires touch.
- Best for: offices and small businesses.
Face recognition
- Pros: touchless, fast, good for large staff numbers. Modern devices include anti-spoofing to reject photos.
- Cons: higher cost. Strong backlight at entrances can affect performance if poorly installed.
- Best for: factories, hospitals, schools and busy entrances.
PIN code
Simple and cheap, but codes get shared. Best used as a second factor together with a card or fingerprint.
Questions to ask
- How many people pass through at peak time?
- Is the environment dusty, wet or very bright?
- Do you need attendance reports for payroll?
- Will visitors need temporary access?
- Do you want to manage several doors or branches from one software?
Many sites use a mix: face recognition at the main entrance, cards for visitors and fingerprint plus PIN for sensitive rooms.
Quick checklist to choose the method
- How many people pass at the busiest time? Face recognition is fastest for large numbers.
- Are hands often dirty, wet or worn? Prefer face or card over fingerprint.
- Do visitors need temporary access? Cards or QR codes are easiest to issue and cancel.
- Sensitive rooms: combine two methods, such as card plus fingerprint.
- Need attendance for payroll? Choose a device and software that export the reports you use.
