Turnstiles and Barrier Gates: When Do You Need Them?

Doors control rooms; turnstiles and barriers control flows of people and vehicles. Compare tripod, flap and swing turnstiles, and how boom barriers manage parking.

When hundreds of people or vehicles pass through a single entrance, a normal door is not enough to make sure only one authorised person enters at a time. That is where turnstiles and barriers come in.

Pedestrian turnstiles

Tripod turnstile

Three rotating arms let one person pass per authorisation. Robust and cost-effective. Common in factories, garment units and stadiums.

Flap barrier

Two flaps open quickly and close behind each person. Fast and elegant, ideal for corporate lobbies, metro-style entrances and offices with heavy morning traffic.

Swing barrier

Wider glass or metal gates that also allow wheelchairs, trolleys and luggage. Often installed next to flap barriers as an accessible lane.

Full-height turnstile

Floor-to-ceiling rotating gates for high-security perimeters where climbing over must be prevented.

Plan for emergenciesTurnstiles should open freely during a fire alarm or power cut, and there should always be a separate emergency exit route.

Vehicle barriers

Boom barriers: an arm that lifts for each authorised vehicle. Boom length depends on lane width.
Vehicle detection: loop detectors or radar sensors stop the arm closing on a car.
Identification: long-range UHF tags, ANPR (number plate) cameras or a guard-operated button.
Bollards: for high-security sites that must stop vehicles by force.
